World No Tobacco Day -31 May 2018

World Health Organization (WHO) has declared 31st of May in every year as the “World No Tobacco Day” (WNTD) in order focus on the adverse effects of tobacco. This day highlights the health and other risks of tobacco use, and importance of effective policies in order to reduce tobacco consumption.
This year the WNTD theme is “Tobacco and heart disease”. According to the WHO, this year No Tobacco campaign aims to increase the awareness on two major facts. They are;
• Link between tobacco and heart and other cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including stroke, which combined are the world’s leading causes of death;
• Feasible actions and measures that key audiences, including governments and the public, can take to reduce the risks to heart health posed by tobacco.
This year in Sri Lanka, Ministry of Health along with the National Authority of Tobacco and Alcohol(NATA) requests
“All tobacco users in Sri Lanka not to use tobacco products on 31st May” and
“Tobacco retailers not to sell tobacco products on that day to protect their customers”
This initiative is supported by all the major government and non-government bodies who actively participate in tobacco prevention field including Presidential Task Force on Drug Prevention, Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA), Sri Lanka Heart Association and Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC) .
As the Sri Lankans we all will support this agenda to make a “Tobacco free Country”
