A discussion on Tobacco Industry Politics and the Public

A discussion on Tobacco Industry Politics and the Public was held at The Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo, on Tuesday 18th July 2017, from 9.30 am to 1.00pm. This was organised by the Centre for Combating Tobacco (CCT) with the partnership of Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC), targeting the Editors and News Directors of national media in Sri Lanka. The main aim of this discussion was to introduce tobaccounmasked.lk website, the information portal of the CCT. Dr. Mahesh Rajasuriya, Director of the Centre for Combating Tobacco, Dr. Sajeewa Ranaweera Expert Committee member on Tobacco, Alcohol & Illicit Drugs, Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA), Mr. Pubudu Sumanasekara from Alcohol and Drugs Information Center (ADIC), Dr. Nishan De Mel, Consultant to National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA) and Verite Research and Dr. Manuja Perera from Centre for Combating Tobacco addressed the gathering.

Dr. Sajeewa Ranaweera pointed out the facts which reveal the truth about Tobacco industry in his speech. Mr. Pubudu  Sumanasekara highlighted the tobacco industry influence on media with the recent examples from print and mass media. Dr. Nishan De Mel conducted a question and answer session with the media personals about the tobacco and economy. He also explained how the society is misguided by the media with the influence of the tobacco companies. How the newly established Centre for Combating Tobacco (CCT) can help in monitoring tobacco industry influence was explained by Dr. Mahesh Rajsuriya. Dr. Manuja Perera explained about the newly launched tobaccounmasked.lk website and how to navigate it through her speech.
