Message from Prof. Laksman Dissanayake
Vice Chancellor, University of Colombo

It is with great pride that I wish the very best for the groundbreaking high standard online research database of the Centre for Combating Tobacco (CCT). This landscape of tobacco control and prevention, not only in Sri Lanka, but in the regions as well, will change forever.

It is great that the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo has been invited to host the prestigious WHO Tobacco Industry Observatory in the South East Asia Region. This observatory, which is a hub of research and other activities, is called the Centre for Combating Tobacco.

CCT which was established in 2016, monitors activities of the tobacco industry in Sri Lanka as well as in the region. The influence of the industry at political, economic, social, and personal levels on any area related to tobacco control and public health is closely monitored, analysed by the CCT. This main online data base is named as ‘tobaccounmasked.lk’.

This database adds great value to the University of Colombo as it attracts attention of professionals, journalists, activists, policy makers and other decision makers from all over the world. We are proud to have this WHO observatory, which is one of few such observatories in the world.

Let me wish strength and courage for CCT and its online research database to make a great impact in the field of tobacco control, locally, regionally and internationally.

Professor Lakshman Dissanayake
